the entrance is through the south side of the building, through a door invisible to the eye of most. this door blends well to the brick of the building but if you look closely you'll see it is always cracked. a small towel is kept at the bottom of its frame to keep it always propped open. bring it open with your fingertips.
you'll enter into a corridor leading to a hallway that runs both to your left and your right. to your left you will see a set of double doors that have forever been barricaded shut. no one tries to go through those doors anymore for they know it is no use. of course, though, the idea of what could be held behind them drives the employees mad with wonder. and many theories work their way through the conversations running throughout the hotel, the staff, in the break room where the kitchen places lunch. now the hall that you see extending to your right is the direction you will want to take.
in the daytime, this hall becomes lit with the sunlight beaming through the floor to ceiling windows lining this stretch. at times, upon my arrival to work as i made my way toward the back office, i would stop at these windows and feel the sun bake my face. i'd imagine i was gathering energy before my work shift, knowing that once i entered the office and sat at my desk i would be tied to the phone for the rest of the evening. soul-sucking work, deprived of watching the light change as the day drifted onward. take your time passing these windows and allow yourself to feel the wonder of such grand light bathing your every step.
this hall will turn to your left. chairs are always stacked nearly ceiling-high for the events held in nearby banquet rooms. they dress these chairs in white linens and tie the backs together, indicating luxury. i imagine our largest ball room filled with only these chairs, dressed in their white, but with no one around to sit on them and the image is comical to me. there are luggage racks also, where often you see luggage with their tags on display--one guest in from London, a family of skiers from Washington. once you walk across this short stretch of hallway you will be placed upon the option of three routes....
